Goals from Franck Ribery and Mario Gomez helped Bayern Munich into the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal with a 2-0 victory over Stuttgart.
Despite surrendering top spot in the Bundesliga to Borussia Dortmund over the weekend, Jupp Heynckes' men produced an assured performance that saw them join their title rivals in the semi-finals of the cup competition.
But it was not all good news for Bayern after Bastian Schweinsteiger was forced to leave the field after just 16 minutes following a heavy challenge from Georg Niedermeier.
Bayern dominated early and finally took the lead on the half-hour mark.
Rafinha and Thomas Mueller exchanged passes before the German crossed for Ribery, who met the ball at the front post and sent a deft shot into the net.
The Bavarian club sealed the win less than a minute into the second half.
Mueller was the creator again, crossing to Gomez, and although Stuttgart's goalkeeper Sven Ulreich was able to parry the 26-year-old's first shot, he could not prevent Gomez from smashing home the rebound.
In the German capital, two goals in extra time has handed Borussia Moenchengladbach a place in the last four ahead of Hertha Berlin.
Neither side were able to decide the quarter-final in 90 minutes.
But in the additional 30 minutes, Filip Daems put his side ahead from the spot after an incredible lack of control by Hertha defender Roman Hubnik.
In his eagerness to run onto an ambitious ball into the box, 'Gladbach's Igor De Camargo knocked Hubnik to the ground.
The Czech was visibly irritated with the Belgian and went toe-to-toe with the 28-year-old, who collapsed after slight contact between the two players' heads, resulting in a red card for Hubnik and handing Moenchengladbach victory.
Oscar Wendt wrapped up the win for the visitors' with the last kick of the match.
In the third match of the DFB Pokal on Wednesday, Bundesliga 2 side Greuther Furth shocked Hoffenheim 1-0 at home thanks to a goal by Canada international Olivier Occean in the 44th minute.
